As an Occupational Therapist I have been able to draw on skills developed working in community healthcare, education, IT and the creative arts. I have degree and post-graduate qualifications in Architecture, Computer Animation, Psychology and Occupational Therapy and worked in computer graphics and as a freelance artist both before working in health and social care and alongside my current NHS Rehabilitation role. I have found that my creative skills have been utilised frequently in supporting people toward their goals as an Occupational Therapist, whether it is by using three dimensional visualisation to demonstrate assistive equipment techniques or through producing creative teaching aids to encourage participation.
Shared goal of improving health and wellbeing can really bring out your creative side
I would say working in the health professions is incredibly rewarding, whilst I love working as an individual artist I think working together with others toward shared goal of improving health and wellbeing can really bring out your creative side with its unique challenges. Everyone you work with as a healthcare professional is a unique individual with their own health story and that means everyday is different and challenging in new ways.
